FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
August 30, 2006Statement by Anne Forristall Luke, President, U.S. Tuna Foundation, Concerning GotMercury.org and Environment Illinois Study
It is well-established that eating fish — including canned tuna — provides numerous health benefits, is heart-healthy and is central to a well-balanced diet. Fish is part of the solution to the most serious health problems in America today — heart disease and obesity. In fact, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA), the American Heart Association, and healthcare and nutrition experts across the country agree that Americans need to eat more fish to combat these health problems. Mixed messages and misinformation — like the study released today by GotMercury.org and Environment Illinois — are confusing consumers and, as a result, Americans may be needlessly and dangerously avoiding fish. To prevent this confusion from exacerbating a public health crisis Americans should consult with their doctors, health care providers and public health experts like the FDA and USDA.
